Girl Scouts

Gloria brought me the Girl Scout uniforms that her Mom and aunt wore in the 1940's.  There wasn't a lot of fabric, so the quilt is a small wall hanging - 28 x 32.   I quilted simple wiggly lines on the seams so as not to detract from the embroidery and embellishments.

She did the research and found the names of each badge so I could label them.

I made pinwheels from the 2 different fabrics and used that as a border.

The sleeve of the tweed fabric had the troop number, region name, and a trefoil

I kept all the buttons and pockets and was able to incorporate them

The tweed uniform had embroidery on the collar

There is even a Girl Scout fabric that I found for the backing and binding

Storm at Sea

Kathy pieced this Storm at Sea pattern as a wedding gift for her niece.  I used a cream thread in the background, and a blue/green variegated in the colored areas.  It measures 85 x 100.

The coloring creates 2 large blue hearts - a variation of the traditional Storm at Sea coloring.

I quilted a curved fill around the larger diamonds, which creates a secondary star pattern.

I quilted a large swirl with a hook to fill the diamonds, along with connecting curves to help fill the space

The smaller blocks have figure 8's and connecting curves

the larger blocks have the hooks and connecting curves

I put feathers in the narrow border, and the hooks on a vine in the large border

She found a great backing that has all the same colors

En Provence

This quilt pattern is Bonnie K Hunter's 2016 mystery.  I'ts titled "En Provence" - named after her travels last year in the Provence region France.  She chose the colors based on what she saw there - mostly the fields of lavender.  I pieced and quilted it for my guild's raffle quilt for our April 2018 show.  All of the fabrics are batiks except for the solid light grey in the border 4-patches.  It measures 87 x 87.

I did lots of ruler work - as that is my favorite type of quilting.  I followed the piecing to create cross-hatching in the border:

I created triangles and diamond shapes in the red star blocks, with loops in the center and a wiggly line through the red

The diamond shape is repeated in the purple block, with straight lines through the corner 4-patches that align throughout the quilt

The green/yellow block have straight lines, hooks, and the same loops in the center and in the small triangles

I found the perfect purple batik for the backing and binding

Megan's Memories

This is the third t-shirt quilt I've done for Megan.  One for high school, one for college, and this one is a little bit of everything.  It's 84 x 88

I did an all-over quilting pattern - some swirls, straight lines, and jagged curves.

The backing is red dots, and I used the same fabric for the binding

Joan's Applique

Joan did a beautiful job on this applique.  The stitches are totally hidden.
  It's 52 x 52, and will be a  wall hanging

She wanted a filler in the background -

and cross hatching in all the baskets -

lines 1" apart on the large center basket

lines 1/2 inch apart on the 4 corner baskets

I did simple fills in the 2 inner borders -

she pieced the backing from her stash -

Charity Rag Quilt

I made this for my guild's favorite charity.  Quilts are given to children that are taken from their homes for various reasons.  Teen Mom's are also allowed to purchase them with points earned through their program.

I made a flower quilt for my Mom and these are leftover fabrics, as well as some that I decided not to use.  It's 60 x 72.

I put raggy seams on both sides rather than just on the front.

I bought yardage for the back because I didn't have enough fabric to cut 2 of each block.  So the back is all the same.  Kind of nice to have it different.

Maureen's Dahlia

Sarah's mother-in-law - Maureen - started piecing these dahlias in 1943 when she was 16 years old.   They are hand appliqued to the purple background with black embroidery floss - typical of that time period.. She completed the top herself, but Sarah wasn't sure when.  It's 78 x 95.

I sewed in the ditch around each flower, then again 1/4" away to keep it separated from the background fill.  The meander filler pushed the purple to the back and lets the dahlia pop.  I also used white thread to add an outline of each petal 1/4 inch from the edge.

There are some very different fabrics included.  some are very shear, and there is even an eyelet fabric:

I added feathers in each of the sashings, and flower petals in the cornerstones

More feathers in the white border, and meander again in the purple border

I found the perfect backing - the colors are a great match and the design is from the same time period

Janet's paper piecing

Jane made a quilt for her grandson several years ago, so I guess it's only fair that she made one now for her grand-daughter.  This pretty green quilt is 51 x 65

She paper pieced little 9-patch blocks, then added irregular sashing strips between.

9-patch

She wanted a simple meander for quilting, so this one went together fast.

The backing is a plain white sheet:
