Molly's Pillowcase

I made this quilt for Molly in 2009.  She's decided that she needs to have a "study pillow" to take to college with her.  She has some extra shirts.  So I used fleece to match the quilt, put two shirts on each side and a zipper on the end.  She can put a king size pillow in it and use it to lean against while studying.  Totally her idea!!  It's 23 x 41.

Betty's Musical Quilt

Betty made this quilt for her grandson who sings in a choir and also plays the piano.  I didn't get pictures of the whole thing, just the quilting.  The fabrics are the piano keys shown, plus rows of a huge choir in robes. You can just see the edge of a treble clef that she embroidered in the middle.   The fabrics are perfect for both of his hobbies.  I used a pantograph called "Music (notes only)  by Different Strokes, and used an eggshell colored thread that blends perfectly.

Jamie's T-shirts

This was actually a January finish, but I'm just now getting around to getting the pictures out of the camera and getting them posted.  Jamie is a Purdue grad, and these shirts are some great memories for her.  In fact, two of the sweatshirts were not going to be included because she still wore them. But she decided a couple days later that they needed to be in the quilt, so got them to me to be included.  We ended up adding and extra row to fit them in, so this quilt is extra long.  There are even 5 shirts on the back.  She had the great idea to outline the dark shirts in grey so they would not be lost in the black sashings.  The backing is the same black as the sashings on the front.  Size is 71 x 96.  Quilting is interlocking squares - free motion.

Friendship Star

This is the Block of the Month for my guild for January.  I made 5 so I have a greater chance of winning.  The request was for scrappy, so here they are!  They have a little taste of golf - the background fabric is white golf balls with a colored tee here and there.  They finish at 9".

Update - I won 23 blocks!!  So I'll have to make a few more to even it out, and to make it a little bigger.  This one will be a charity donation.

Memories for Grandma

This quilt was made with baby clothes for a Grandma going through chemo treatments.  The two dresses were worn by her two daughters, and the other three outfits were worn by all 8 of her grandchildren.  The ruffles on the dresses were left loose, as were the feet and collars of the other outfits.  All of their names are embroidered in the middle - the yellow are the two daughters, and the white names are the grandkids.  The sashings are parts of a quilt/blanket made by grandma.  So she can have her entire family wrapped around her as she goes through this tough time.  The backing is a blue fleece, and I did a stitch-in-the-ditch to hold the layers together.

Block of the Month

These are my two blocks for my guild's Dec Block of the Month.  It's the CARD TRICKS pattern, and are all to be red/white/blue.  The idea is that whoever wins the blocks will make a Quilt of Valor quilt to be donated to that fabulous program.  Hopefully that winner will be me!!

Dan's T-shirts

This was made for a co-worker who is an athletic trainer and health teacher.  T-shirts from college, and from our school system.  Quilting is medium all-over meander.  Size is 63 x 80 -plenty of length since he's over 6 ft.

Crown Royal bags

Jim had saved LOTS of Crown Royal whiskey bags, and this is what he wanted done with them.  (No - he didn't drink all of that - he got bags from friends also . . .)  There are 54 bags of various sizes covering every inch of the sport coat/suit jacket. There are very little bags down each side of the lapel, and a specialty NASCAR bag on the each shoulder.   Even the back collar is covered with a bag.  The bags on the body of the jacket I could machine stitch, but the ones on the sleeves had to be hand-stitched.  It's a good thing Jim has broad shoulders as the jacket now weighs a ton!!

Quilt of Valor

This will be donated to the Quilt of Valor program, (info here) but especially to a local group that has just returned home.  It is pieced entirely of recycled shirts, including the back.  I saved the backs of the shirts to have large pieces for the backing.  There are a ton of feathers in the quilting.  I also made a presentation case and label for the back.  The case can be used as a pillow case also.  There is a strip of the case fabric across the back to pull it all together.  The organization will fill in the name of the recipient before it's presented.  It's 60 x 76.

Kathy's T-shirts

Kathy is a golf friend who was a PE teacher and swim coach for 36 years.  She had so many shirts that we had to put 5 on the back.  The quilting pattern is a pantograph that looks like waves on the water.  She chose fish fabric for the back.  This is queen sized:  91 x 108.

Taylor's t-shirts

Taylor is a past student, so this was fun for me to do.  Taylor ran Cross country in middle school and high school, and these shirts are great memories of those times.  The school colors are red and white, with sometimes a black accent, so this is a good representation of that.  Taylor loves blue, so that's what the backing is.  The quilting is a meander and loops.  Size is 58 x 74.

This is Patty's quilt - the third of three quilts for Skip's family.  Skip was the local  high school swim coach for years and years.   The cornerstones are from a pair of green shorts.  This has martini fabric on the back - the two daughters picked  fun backing fabrics.  This one I quilted with free  motion waves to make it look like water.  The label for the back is the same as her sister's quilt - she spelled out her dad's name vertically - then came up with words that describe her dad - one for each letter of his name.   The other two family quilts can be found here and here.  This one is 87 x 71 and has a rod pocket for hanging. 

Nate's Memories

Nate passed away at a young age, and his wife had me make this for her - something for her to wrap up in and remember happy times.   There are two rows of t-shirts and steelworker bandanas, then I filled in the rest in Bonnie K. Hunter's strip twist pattern using dress shirts, and lots of fun boxers and bandanas. (middle picture).   The backing is the same blue as the borders on the front.  I quilted a free motion pattern using 3 sizes of circles connected one one side, with a meander between sets of circles (bottom picture) It's about a full bed size (83 x 92)  The label on the back is simply his name.

Skip's t-shirts #2

This is the second of three quilts for Skip's family.  The cornerstones are from a pair of green shorts.  This one has leopard print fabric on the back for Mary.  She came up a great label for the back - she spelled out her dad's name vertically - then came up with words that describe her dad - one for each letter of his name.   It's 6'5w x 6'8h and has a rod pocket for hanging.  You can go here to see the first one.

Rally for the Cure

These are "crying towels" that I donated for the last place team in our Rally for the Cure event held at Beechwood Golf Course in Laporte.  We had 48 women particpate, so a great turnout.  All proceeds are donated to the Susan G. Komen foundation.

These two are for customers. The green one is for a woman in my league who says she has trouble hitting fairways, so she created this fictional organization and delcared herself president!!  A friend ordered it for her.

Kid's Games Challenge Quilt

Our guild had a challenge to generate charity quilts for the children's organization that we support.  We were given a fat quarter of the black print fabric that runs the diagonal in the photo, and had to create a quilt that showed kids playing games, or portrayed games, or was a game itself.  I bought fabric with differet balls on them - basketballs, soccer balls, baseballs, footballs, and of course, golf balls and tees.  The top and bottom borders are from some leftover Las Vegas fabric - representing the ADULT games!!  The quilts were presented at the July meeting and voted on, with the winners getting gift cards to area quilt shops.       40 x 52

T-Shirts

These are the t-shirts of one of our local high school and now college tennis players.  What a great collection of school and tennis camp shirts and tournaments.  He has even spent some time playing tennis in Romania!!  It's a queen size -90  x 104.  Same fabric on the back as the sashings and binding.  I quilted it with a great masculine panto. (bottom photo)   The top two photos are top and bottom halves - couldn't fit it all in one photo.

Rag Quilt

A great "quilt as you go" project for charity.  Uses up batting scraps, as well as smaller pieces of left over fabrics.  Seams are snipped at 1/4" intervals after sewing so they "rag" in the washer.  This will go to my guild's charity group - it supports a children's organization.    36 x 48.

Wedding quilt

This one was made as a wedding gift for a family member.  I took a chance on the fabric patterns, but they had a room with animal prints in their previous home, so I was hoping it would still work.  They both love it, so a good choice.   Plain black on the back with a simple meander quilting pattern.   54 x 62    Updated 6/23 - Just got back from their wedding on the beach in Florida and a visit to their home.  The quilt is proudly displayed on a chair back.  The fabrics fit perfectly with their other accessories with the same theme - even the rug.  They love the quilt and it will certainly get used!
