Darla's Stars

This is a charity quilt made from BOM blocks that I won last winter.  It will be donated as a comfort quilt to our local children's charity.  The pattern uses 1/2 snowball blocks to form a slanted star.  You have to look closely, but they are there.  The body of the star is light, while the 6 points are the colored triangles.  It's 40 x 56.

I changed the look of the quilt with the quilting.  By adding lines and filling in triangles, I change the star to a broken dishes block.

I found the backing at an  estate sale.  It's perfect for a children's quilt.

Abstraction

This is a block-of-the-month project.  I presented the block to our guild.  My friend Pat won 12 blocks, and promptly gifted them right back to me.  I made 13 more at our retreat last fall, and finally got it all put together.  The pieced border is made from bonus triangles created by double-sewing the flying geese blocks.  The skinny red border and corners adds a little pop.  I only had to make 16 more half-square triangles to have enough to fit around the quilt.  The backing is black and white squiggly lines, and that same fabric turned out perfect as the binding also.  I did a cable in the large border, half circles in the red border, and line dancing in the pieced border.  I quilted a free-motion mock Baptist Fan pattern in the body.  I used a white/grey/black variegated thread that really adds to the "abstraction" of the quilt.  Sometimes you see it, sometimes you don't - depending on what thread color shows up on which fabric.  The completed quilt is 72" square.

Friendship Star

I won 22 BOM blocks at my guild meeting.  My original blocks can be seen HERE.  I made enough extra blocks to get this size quilt (46 x 65).  It's for the CASA charity that my guild supports. I used up some stash for the borders.  I quilted some hooks and feathers in the blue border, circles in the small green border, and line dancing in the blocks.  I used rayon embroidery thread in the green and blue as I didn't have those colors in my quilting thread stash.  It works well - adds a nice sheen to those areas.

Friendship Star

This is the Block of the Month for my guild for January.  I made 5 so I have a greater chance of winning.  The request was for scrappy, so here they are!  They have a little taste of golf - the background fabric is white golf balls with a colored tee here and there.  They finish at 9".

Update - I won 23 blocks!!  So I'll have to make a few more to even it out, and to make it a little bigger.  This one will be a charity donation.

Block of the Month

These are my two blocks for my guild's Dec Block of the Month.  It's the CARD TRICKS pattern, and are all to be red/white/blue.  The idea is that whoever wins the blocks will make a Quilt of Valor quilt to be donated to that fabulous program.  Hopefully that winner will be me!!

Sneakin' In

8 of these blocks were from the BOM for my guild.  I made the rest to make this 56 x 68.  This will go to our charity  - Comfort Quilts.  I quilted it with the Baptist Fan pattern.  It's kind of hard to see on the backing, but it's there.  They are wider apart than normal - just to get it DONE!! The back is pretty crazy - it was a donation from a customer, and I promised it would go in a charity quilt.  The name comes from the fact that I did it sneaking in an hour here or there between all the customer quilts.

BOM - May 2011

This was the pattern for the Block of the Month for my quilt guild for the June meeting.  I used heavy denim for the pants,and recycled shirts from Goodwill.  I really wanted to win the blocks, so I made 4 to give me 4 chances. Didn't work though, some other lucky lady got them all.  Some of the women were really creative - they add a tiny patch pocket on the pants, and gold top-stitching lines just like on a real pair of jeans.  Some even added detail to the boots.  I'll definitely keep this pattern - my nephew and wife live in Houston, so if they ever have a son, they'll get one of these quilts for sure!!  May 2011

NOT a Christmas Quilt

I won these block-of-the-month blocks at my guild's 2010 Christmas meeting.  My friend Pat designed the block, and 29 of them were made.  She stipulated that it had to be red and green, but NO Christmas fabrics - hence the name!  I added 3 more so I could set them on-point and made it 64 x 76.  I will give the quilt to Pat as she really wanted to win the blocks, plus she was a great help to me this year as a new member.         (Jan 2011)

Snow balls for charity

I won these blocks as the block-of-the-month from my guild in  Feb 2010, and just now got around to putting them together.  Added 20 extra blocks to make a nice sized quilt.  (52x64).  Found some snowflake fabric to use for borders and backing.  Did a simple meander just to get it done.  It will go to charity - our guild sponsors a "comfort quilts" group for the needy.  (Dec 2010)
