Quilt of Valor

I made this disappearing 9-patch while spending 6 nights in a motel.  :)  I had the 5" charms all cut, then pieced them, cut them, and re-pieced them in the motel.  Got it all done except for the borders.  I used a blue fabric with gold stars for the backing.  I quilted stars in the red and blue squares, white squiggly lines in the white sections.  The first border has a diagonal zig zag, and I put lots of little swirls in the blue border.  It's 64x78, has a matching presentation case, and embroidered label.

Quilt of Valor

This one was pieced by Annette in Michigan.  It's another disappearing 9-patch - those are really popular right now.  I used a blue variegated thread and put stars in the border, 8-pointed stars in the larger squares, and a medium meander every where else.  The quilting shows up well on the solid back.  Annette sent me a photo of her presenting the quilt to a veteran.

Alicia's Dad

These t-shirts belonged to Alicia's Dad and she wanted a quilt to keep his memory alive in her heart.  This is afghan size - 53 x 81.  The blue cornerstones are from his blue bandana.   I quilted loops in the sashing and in each t-shirt.  The back is US Air Force fabric since her Dad was a veteran.

Tot Shop

This is a baby rag quilt (30 x 30) for the Tot Shop that is part of the Family and Youth Services Bureau of our county.  People make donations that young moms can purchase with coupons they earn by attending parenting classes, getting shots for their babies, etc.  They are hosting a drive now for a "Pick and Treat for Tots"  program - to gather donations for the program.

These were Jeanne's clothes from the 70's, made from wool plaids and velour.  She wanted a queen sized quilt.  I added cream colored flannel for the front, and red flannel for the back.  There is a 17" border top and bottom to get the desired size, so I added quite a bit of quilting.  I used a 3" template for the large circles, and then filled in with swirls and smaller circles.  The quilt is really heavy and warm with all the wool and flannel.  It's 92 x 108.

Quilt of Valor

Debby L from Pennsylvania pieced this tumblers pattern.  I quilted stars and loops in the main body of the quilt to keep with the patriotic theme.  I added diamonds in the red border, and diagonal lines in the large border.  The backing is blue with small hearts.  I had thread that matched the outer border perfectly; that color is repeated throughout the quilt, an in the backing, so it was a perfect fit.  It's 64 x 74.

 It's a small world - it turns out that Debby, her sister, and I all graduated from the same university!

Quilt of Valor

Becky H. from my quilt guild won the block of the month - the flag blocks. She and a friend made enough of the alternate blocks to make this quilt.  It's 61x65, set in blocks of 5x5.  I quilted arcs in the red border and diamonds in the blue border and larger sashings.   I did squiggly lines in the smaller blue sashings and the red stripes of the flag blocks, and line dancing in the alternate blocks.  I put 8-pointed stars in the blue fields of the flag blocks, and in the one big blue star block in the center.   I left the center of the flag blocks (with the gold star) blank, as the quilting around it makes it pop out.   I used a red/white/blue variegated thread in the top and bobbin.  Becky chose a white muslin for the back, so the stitching really shows there.

Watercolor

This small watercolor was pieced by a customer and brought to me for finishing.  I quilted roses and leaves throughout the body, and feathers in the first two borders.  I put a black zigzag line through the outer border.  I used a purple/blue variegated thread for the feathers and a light pink for the roses.  They can be seen better on the black backing.  I also added a rod-pocket for hanging.  The finished piece is 31 x 31.

Golf Towels

I made these for my golf league.  A nice treat for the winners to put on their bags since they can't carry trophies around!

Quilt of Valor

This quilt was pieced by Vicki G, and sent to me for quilting. We were paired through the Quilts of Valor organization.  The name of the pattern is:

"Non Sibi Sed Patriae" ,(not for self but for country), from Fons & Porter.    This is inscribed on the chapel doors of the US naval academy.

I quilted four 8-pointed stars in the blue field, with straight lines in the stripes - staying with the "stars & stripes" theme.  The backing is red with small gold stars.  Vicki has added the binding, and will send it to the selected veteran.

Pete's Paintbrush

This 5" (unfinished) block was made for  Gay Bomers at Sentimental Stitches.  The husband (Pete)  of her good friend passed away.  He was a painter, amongst other things, so Gay is hoping to get many of their customers to make this block.  She will put them all together and quilt it.  She has named it "Pete's Paintbrush", as all the blocks will come in different colors.  She created a paper pieced patter to make the small pieces much easier, and will put them together to make a quilt for her friend.  Certainly a loving tribute to Pete.   Fabrics are to be Kaffe Fasset, so it should be colorful.

Friendship Star

I won 22 BOM blocks at my guild meeting.  My original blocks can be seen HERE.  I made enough extra blocks to get this size quilt (46 x 65).  It's for the CASA charity that my guild supports. I used up some stash for the borders.  I quilted some hooks and feathers in the blue border, circles in the small green border, and line dancing in the blocks.  I used rayon embroidery thread in the green and blue as I didn't have those colors in my quilting thread stash.  It works well - adds a nice sheen to those areas.

Fishy placemats

I made these for my Mom.  The blue fish are for her summer cottage in Canada, and the green ones are to use on her lanai in Florida.  All 4 blue ones are the same - different fabrics on each side.  There are two sets of green - the two fish facing each other are a pair - same two fabrics.  I bought yardage and quilted it with a meander using muslin as a backing, then sewed right sides together with the second fabric. There's not a lot of pre-quilted fabric to pick from, so this was a better option.  The blue ones were photographed on a braided rug, so it's a little busy!
